Look into our crystal ball and we’ll tell you which social media will become absolutely huge in 2020…
It’s Tik Tok, of course!
It’s already a large scale platform with more than 500 million active daily users and more than a million videos viewed every day.
Compare that with Facebook, the Big Daddy of social media, and you’ll see how far Tik Tok still has to go.
As of November 2019, Facebook had 1.62 billion active daily users and 2.45 billion monthly active users.
More than 4.75 billion pieces of content were shared daily.
So, for Tik Tok, created by ByteDance, there is huge potential for growth in 2020.
It’s a fun platform which shares video clips of skits, stunts, and people lip-synching to popular songs.
It has already attracted a host of celebrities such as Will Smith, Cardi B, Marshmello, Ariana Grande, Jason Derulo, Lizzo, Ed Sheeran, and Reese Witherspoon.

In 2020, it’s likely that global brands will start establishing their own presence on the platform to create a brand voice and engage with a much younger audience than they find on Facebook.
Tik Tok is beloved of people of all ages, but is especially loved by Generation Z, the new, key demographic which is not attracted by more established social media like Facebook.
How do you use Tik Tok?
Like most other social media you can download the Tik Tok app, sign up, and set up your profile, then view the video feed and like, share or comment on the videos you enjoy.
You can search for videos and follow users via videos, a search, or TikCode, a QR code on the right hand side of people’s profiles. As you decide what you like and interact with other users, your feed becomes more personalised.
When you view a video, swiping left will show you the creator’s profile.
Once you’ve decided what you want to do on video, set up your shot, then choose your special effects.
Record it, make your final edits, and then add a caption.
You can also duet with other users and take part in a challenge.
There are filters for slow motion, AR filters which remove skin blemishes, add bunny ears, or other effects, and an auto-timer for a countdown so you can film hands free.
You can add sounds and musical overlays and create photo montages instead of videos.
Why should businesses get involved?
Few businesses have as yet realised the vast potential of this social media, so it’s possible to get good traction with organic content.
If your target client is in Gen Z, this is a cost-effective way to reach them, engage with them, and make them brand ambassadors who will participate in your challenges and like, comment on, and share your videos.
